Low-cost laptops have become so big that around the world even relatively unknown vendors are looking to get in on a piece of the action. In the U.K., Elonex is preparing for release a new laptop dubbed “One” that will be aimed at the educational sector. While refusing to release any specific hardware information, such as processor type or speed, they did reveal that it will be a Linux-based machine complete with wireless support, solid state storage and a fairly light weight.

Interestingly, their choice of Linux over Windows was prompted by more than just cost. Elonex has stated that it is also following in the guidelines that the government set forth which encourage businesses to move away from Microsoft, which they view as a monopoly. They'll be competing with the likes of the XO laptop, the Classmate PC, the Eee PC and a host of others that have made themselves known in the past year.
