LG stops laptop sales due to battery meltdown

For the second time this year, a laptop computer manufactured by LG was damaged due to a battery meltdown. The malfunction occurred while the laptop was being used by a graduate student at Hanyang University in Seoul, and though no one suffered injuries, LG has voluntarily stopped selling the laptop model in question.

The story breaks in at an unfortunate time for LG, as a similar battery mishap occurred just last month when a Korean reporter’s laptop began to spark and smoke before exploding. At that time, however, LG said a battery recall was not necessary because an independent investigation concluded that the batteries were safe and the explosion did not occur under regular use conditions.
