For the better part of a year, it was speculated that MySQL would be going public and make an IPO to raise funds. They surprised many when instead they announced that Sun would be acquiring them fully, buying the company for about $1 Billion. That acquisition has come to a close, and now MySQL is a part of Sun.

Obviously this adds an absolutely huge page in Sun's portfolio, with MySQL being one of the world's most popular database solutions. As most of the company's income came from paid support, Sun is now charged with the same task. More than anything, hopefully the project as a whole will maintain the integrity and freedom it always has, with paid support or otherwise.
