Could Windows dominance in the workplace be threatened anytime soon? Probably not, but when the largest IT company in the world is researching using Macs as workstations instead of PCs, it makes you wonder just how much people really need to use Windows. IBM has 100 researchers in a pilot program, gathering research about how effective it is offering Macs over PCs. They claim that they have no defined strategy to simply "switch", but want to be able to offer their workers the option of using Macs or PCs running Linux.

Choice is often a plus - and with a company as large as IBM, you're definitely going to get many employees who would prefer to use different software than others. Keeping more diverse systems under control would also be a tough nut to crack, so IBM's actions in the future could easily trickle down to other companies who are considering similar moves.
