Intel delays Centrino 2 to mid-July

Though initially scheduled for release next week at Computex Taipei 2008, TGDaily is now reporting that Intel is pushing back the launch of its Centrino 2 notebook platform (previously known as Montevina) to July 14, due to a series of issues relating to the platform’s integrated graphics and the 802.11n wireless network controller.

The delay could prompt significant setbacks for a number of PC makers that are readying Centrino 2-based systems for a launch that coincides with the launch of the platform itself. It could also mean, however, a key opportunity for AMD to pitch its Puma platform which is scheduled to launch early June, targeting the entry-level and mainstream segment of the market. It will be interesting to see whether AMD will be able to take advantage of this situation and how much a six-week delay could affect Intel.
