Amazon plans on-demand video service
Expanding on their existing Unbox download feature Amazon is reportedly weeks away from launching a new on-demand video streaming service, the company’s chief executive Jeff Bezos revealed speaking at the All Things D Conference today.
Unbox currently offers the ability to download and rent movies, not stream them, so one would think the new offering would directly compete with Netflix, which allows users to stream unlimited amounts titles to their computers and TV sets for a monthly fee.
Bezos did use the key words “for-pay” and “a la carte” when announcing the video streaming service, however, which makes it sound a bit different from what Netflix is offering. We’ll have to wait and see how this develops. One thing is for certain, the digital movie distribution landscape is becoming a crowded and competitive place.
