SanDisk announces microSD card with MP3 music
It’s no secret that, as sales of music on physical media continues to slow, everyone – including the four major record labels – is moving towards downloaded or streamed digital music. But apparently that doesn’t include SanDisk, which is hoping to reinvent the music industry’s business model based on with its slotMusic venture.
Basically the company will start offering a 1GB microSD-format card preloaded with DRM-free music from one of four music companies. Retail giants Wal-Mart and Best Buy have agreed to stock the new format. With this, SanDisk is hoping to take advantage of the huge growth of music-playing mobile phones – many of which come with a microSD card slot. Pricing, availability, and a complete list of available music will be released “in time for the coming holiday season.”
