GTA IV PC release plagued by bugs

By on December 4, 2008, 9:12 AM
The highly anticipated PC release of Grand Theft Auto IV has been met with plenty of flak on gaming forums across the web, with many players reporting errors that range from restrictive graphics settings even on high-end systems and missing textures to general installation error codes and on the whole quite poor performance.

The bugs have been well documented on the Steam forums where you can also find a list of user-compiled potential fixes, which include updating your system with the latest service pack for Vista or XP, installing .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1 and using a specific set of drivers for Nvidia or ATI cards to fix the missing texture problems. Rockstar has issued a brief statement on the problems, claiming they are working to help solve the issues with GTA IV PC as quickly as possible. In the meantime, Steam is reportedly even going so far as to start offering refunds for unhappy customers.

As with all the GTA games, as well as things like 'Mercenaries 2' and such... The Game developers just basically transfered it over from consol with only THE basic program adjustments made for PC. Lazy, profit planned style. The games havent been optimized for PC at all, and so you can expect such bugs

But GTA4 is UNPLAYABLE. Even at LOW on everything and sliders full left, it is not a pleasant experience driving - just too unresponsive. And even if it played smooth as silk at those settings, I wouldn't play it as it looks rubbish. This game needs some serious optimisation. And i can't up it from 1280x1024 without it being completely unplayable.Alos, i've tried it on XP SP3 and Vista ultimate SP1, marginally faster under XP, but then on my XP installation I have disabled all unnecessary windows services and there are no additional processes loaded at startup - i run that drive purely for games, nothing else. My Vista drive has a small amount running in the background as its my standard installation i use for all purposes, I dont use an antivirus or any security software on either installation - just dont need them.Such a shame this game is so poor ...
