Fujitsu sells HDD business to Toshiba?

It’s been just a couple of days since Fujitsu announced it would cease production of hard disk drive heads but it appears the company has already found a suitor for the rest of its loss-making HDD business. According to The Register, the number six hard disk drive maker has agreed to sell its business to Toshiba, but what exactly the purchase entails is not clear.

Evidently the head manufacturing plant at Nagano, Japan isn’t part of the deal. There is also speculation that Fujitsu's Yamagata drive media plant may not be included in the purchase and that another plant in Thailand could close with around 7,000 jobs threatened. No selling price has been given, although some speculate it is in the $350-450 million range. Details of the agreement are expected to be announced next week.
