An interconnect chipset that will allow server vendors to have systems with 32 Opteron CPUs should be with as next year, according to a recent article. The technology comes to us courtesy of Newisys, a Texas based firm started in July 2000. The secret is the "Horus" chip, which was designed to allow a glueless 8-way system using AMD's Opteron chip. Horus serves as a controller, maintaining connections between the processors using the Opteron's HyperTransport links. This permits scalability to 32 processors.
