I know that DDR memory runs at dual rate when you have a symmetrical setup. Right now I have 2x 256mb DDR400 memory sticks. If I install a 2x 512mb memory kit in the other two slots will I still be running at dual rate?

Erm.. DDR runs at "dual rate" no matter what.

Dual channel setup means that two memory modules can be accessed simultaneously, giving you more data per clock cycle (if your motherboard or CPU support it).

Yes, you can use different pairs or RAM for dual channel mode.

"Yes, you can use different pairs or RAM for dual channel mode"

This is true, but you won't be running this memory at it's maximum performance level
