can anyone help me on buying a hard drive? my specs are: amd athlon 64 3000+ 2ghz, 256mb ddr pc3200, asrock k8vm800, 17gb hdd. i want something like 200gb.

What kind of help do you need? Your motherboard should support SATA drives. Just get a cheap 200GB SATA drive. It should be around $70 on sale.

SATA or regular IDE shouldn't matter if YOU don't have a preference. Pretty much all brands now have about same failure rates, so just get some 7200 with 8megs or higher cache and the best warranty.

The only real advantage to using Sata drives is that leaves your IDe ports for more optical drives.
