Who is the manufacture of your motherboard? You can not upgrade the CPU to AM3. If the board was designed for AM 2. You would have to replace the motherboard.

Xfx nvidia board. I was doing some research and some people were saying you can use an am3 on a am2+ board but you would need to upgrade the bios. is this True?

It depends. You need to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and check the list of compatible CPUs for your motherboard. If the one you want is listed, there should be a BIOS version you can use to update your motherboard.

The list I found for xfx nvidia boards show it supports am2, am2+, and am3. all the am3 cpu are the phenom x3 and x4. I have american megatrends bios.

Which motherboard do you have? All we can give is general advice unless we know specifically which board you have.
