Either way, the way that the pc industry is moving towards ever-increasing power usage for components is both bad for the environment but also bad for consumers. When the components uses more power, and the performance is limited the moment the cpu/gpu hits a set temperature limit, the consumer or system builder has to know enough about airflow and cooling to keep the system thermally cooled and keep the performance as the manufacturers claim and what is shown on review sites.

Not to mention that these systems are reaching points where they heat up your room so much that you need to consider how to deal with this too if you want to be comfortable.

Yes the DDR5 impact makes that $300 price look conspicuous. It's bound to fall back to $250 in a few months, certainly if Raptor lake is competitive. At least the platform should have 2-3 years life in it - that would offset some of the pain.

We egocentric users forget that amd 6 cores are just binned 8 cores.

Zen 4 is a much simpler (better yielding ccx?)

I can understand their reluctance to cut revenue, just to have a presence at a price point that may be better served by AM4 until the 8 core market has been sated properly.

True, but it pales by comparison w/ its importance at the big end of town - power is meaningless w/o the context of efficiency - and since they are connected (a chip that serves both (like modular, scalable Zen) has inarguable cost benefits of manufacturing scale)
Overstretched Grid problems are now the paramount consideration.

There is a big backlog of demand for cloud capacity, and instance clients are being rationed.
IE. -the efficiency of the chips dictates the revenue generating capacity of the DC

Curiously, just as we may choose free range chicken, a corporation's choice of cloud provider, can be one of the big deciders of their carbon footprint... an efficient cloud DC is a marketing tool for cloud providers.

A DC powered by Intel would be a very bad look.

To put things into perspective: In 2011 I've bought a 4-core i7-860 CPU for 274€ and a P55A motherboard for 224€, both from a physical store down town.
