Apple exec to leave company after making ill-advised comments in TikTok video

I broad-brushed them because of what Apple Inc. failed to condemn (the hedonistic, vain flaunting of wealth by this former exec), and what they did choose to condemn (a cringy misquote of a 1980s film). It's broad-brushing to condemn a company based on the actions a company takes, now? If you were any farther up Tim Cook you'd be coming out of his mouth.
I couldn't care less about Tim Cook. I also don't think my company or any company has any business commenting on my lifestyle, as long as it's not illegal. Is it Apple's responsibility to comment on every employee's choice of car purchases or personal recreational habits? I don't think so. Apple (or any large corporation) is not and should not be the social conscience of the world.

I think I can make up my own mind about an individual without having some corporate marketing hack tell me how and what to think. We don't know hardly anything about this man, but you're ready to throw him and 150K Apple employees under the bus for one, stupid, comment. PS - Tim Cook donates $5M a year to charities. I'd say that makes him a pretty good guy.

The existence of billionaires is not a symptom of a healthy economy
Short-sighted, misinformed attitudes like this caused many nations to travel down the failed statist-socialist route, and have generated more human misery than all the wars in history combined. Mao alone murdered more than 100 million of his own people, and condemned billions to a lifetime of totalitarian despair. I'll stick with the free market, thank you.

you're ready to throw [Tim Cook] and 150K Apple employees under the bus for one, stupid, comment
Did you not read his post? He's condemning the company not for the "one stupid comment", but for Apple's official company response to that comment. That's a stark difference.

PS - Tim Cook donates $5M a year to charities. I'd say that makes him a pretty good guy.
Tim Cook is a billionaire. A $5M donation from him is a like the average person buying a box of girl scout cookies. And worse, Tim Cook spends a great deal of time (and money) advertising his philanthropy. Do you judge a person solely by their level of virtue signalling?

Cancel Culture at it's best. This world is going to suck in the next few years when we all have to walk around without talking because we just might offend someone else. Sad times....

I always claim to be a the resident SJW warrior ( presumptuous I know ) on the face of it - this story seems pathetic and silly - if that's the case I agree.
What we don't see the nuance here or pay settlement - what was his history - what did those other employees say . Maybe he could have stayed but Apple brought him off - which is what I think is right . This has lawsuit written all over it otherwise - freedom of speech and all that - given Apple TV , Apple music is full of non-PC stuff .

So my take a very very sweet payout - he can not talk about

And what was that response? I see nothing about it in this article nor in the news. Other than they did an investigation, took away his team and fired him. What else do you want? Maybe they should have publicly flogged him. Like I said, my company or any company has no business getting into my private life. And frankly, the little I was able to find via Google indicates that Apple did the right thing with minimal commentary. So, no, I do not believe this is an example of why Apple deserves contempt.

Ah, the classic, "He doesn't donate enough" argument. Yeah, OK. No, I don't judge by virtue signaling, I judge by actions and his action was to donate $5M, apparently every year. While a man might be worth $1.8 B doesn't mean that it is liquid. If you know anything about people like this, much of that wealth is stock and a CEO cannot just sell stock anytime he wants. That is also paper wealth which may or may not be realized when he goes to sell said stock. According to reports he made $100 million in 2021. The year before he made about $15M and the $100M was largely stock (about $85M). So, I'd say $5M is a pretty good sum given that he cannot just sell everything on a moment's notice. How about you, how much did you give to charity last year? 5%of your income? 2%, 0%?

I'm not going to argue about charity - just your point about stock rich , not cash rich - this is not private stock held in a few hands - that need a special buyer .
This is Apple stock - Jobs could of sold 50M easily in 1 hour - if he has it set up with his Broker .
Now he may have restrictions on selling or taking up options ( then on-selling )- but surely most of those would have expired - Ie Apple's well being was not dependent on Jobs not cashing out . Bill Gates has no such problems

That's not exactly true. Executive stock selling is often limited by the company and there are SEC requirements in order to sell. I believe you have to file 90 days in advance of the transaction. The company may also have some restrictions as to when and how much he could sell. I believe these fall under something called a 10b5-1 plan. Stock is often issued as a RSU, or restricted stock unit. Here's some info specific to Tim Cook:

A restricted stock unit (aka RSU) is compensation valued in terms of a company's stock, but the stock is not issued at the time of the grant. Instead, the recipient receives the stock at a later date, a method generally used to make sure employees stay with a company for a set period of time.

While Cook was originally set to receive 1,000,000 RSUs awarded over a 10-year period in two lump sums (the 1,000,000 share number was prior to Apple's 2014 7-1 stock split -- it's now 7,000,000), a 2013 amendment modified how his stock is awarded, shifting it from a time-based system to a performance-based system with the RSUs doled out over a 10-year period from 2011 to 2021.

So while Cook may have wealth on paper, he cannot fully realize that wealth all at once, and in fact may never realize some of that wealth if the company fares poorly.

$5M may be a small sum compared to his total wealth, but when taken over multiple years, it adds up. It's not insignificant and any effort to minimize that is misguided.

I change Gates to Jobs - yes your are right about execute stock - silly me - inside trading and all that, Thanks for your reply .
Actually maybe saying Gates was right - was MS a big Apple share holder to help turn them around

Anyway Jobs was a very strange man - feeding cancer heaps of fructose ( fruit diet ) to cure it - The reason cancer slows down in 90 year old plus people is slow cell growth - maybe he would of been better to fast and trigger autophagy - where body hunts for things to eat like detritus and maybe hopefully cancer cells - would of made more sense anyway.

This is a good thing because it's not like he needed his career to continue. He should have retired over a decade ago. Once money is no longer an issue, the most valuable commodity is time. Anyone who works longer than they have to instead of enjoying life on easy street is patently insane.

Besides, once you have enough to retire comfortably, you should do so because you no longer need that job but I guarantee you that somebody else does. At the end of life, most people's biggest regret is not spending more time with their loved ones and it's usually because they worked for far longer than they had to.
Some of us actually enjoy our work; clearly you don't because you think the idea of continuing to work when you can retire is patently insane. Besides, people regretting not spending more time with their loved ones is not usually due to how long they worked for, but how much they worked each day. You're never going to spend every waking hour with loved ones and many of us (ie. introverts) don't want to either. A 9-5 work schedule lets you spend all the time you need with your family. Demanding hours or excessive overtime is the issue. Also there's evidence in the article of this guy enjoying himself outside of his work (maybe even a little too much) despite being a big wig executive. So I'm not exactly sure who you're preaching to here.

Another instance of Apple special snowflaking and firing someone over a comment protected by the first amendment. What a shocker. People, big breasted women exist and most of them enjoy being fondled. Perfectly normal part of being human.

Class act-move there Apple, real class.

When you're in your 60s & 70's, all alone, surrounded by half a dozen cats, crying yourself to sleep, wondering why no one ever tried to make a move on you...remember this woke nonsense you posted once upon a time.
Exactly. It's getting to the point where men are afraid to even approach a woman these days out of fear that they'll be canceled on social media for even daring to come up to them. You don't even have to say anything to the woman and your goose is cooked.

I imagine that the declining birth rates are going to get even worse. But cats? As you said, yes... we're going to be needing a lot of those.

We are heading toward the society depicted in the Orville TV series:
Basically... that. Welcome to a world where your societal worth is based upon your social credit score. China is already doing this, look for it to come to the Western world and weep.

One minor f**k-up and you're a social pariah. Can't get a job. Can't buy a home. You might as well just die.

Well this is what you get when you let the cancel culture rule the roost. Expect it to get much worse before it gets better. I am sure at some point the rest of the sane world will just get fed up with the Karen's of the world and the cancel culture mentality and say enough is enough and just ignore them and live life like sane people do. If we stop giving them the spot light they will go into the wood work and maybe find something else to do. I don't care if it's just some ***** on the street or a large company acting like they are almighty and being a Karen if we just ignore them and do what we want what are they going do go cry in their corn flakes if they don't get the spot light it becomes boring to them lol.

I am sure this guy though has a pretty good chance of collecting a huge sum of money from Apple either through Apple doing the right thing or through the court system & I am betting it will be through the court system because we all know Apple will not do the right thing since they fired him for something as stupid as this.

Silly goose, it's not about actually caring about or respecting women, it's about being seen to look like you do.
I started noticing that myself. People don't want to be kind, they think that all they need to do is to say the right things. Rights, equality, etc. Look how good I am, LOOK AT ME.

Uh huh. It's all virtue signaling. Look at me, I'm such a great person. Yeah sure, if you were such a great person you wouldn't be calling for the cancelation of someone just because they happen to disagree with you.

These people do it only for the likes, votes, and followers on whatever social media platform that they're on. They don't really care about anyone but their narcissistic self.

I'm referring to those who hoard wealth for the sake of it. If someone loves their work, they should retire when they have millions and volunteer their services to a non-profit to improve the world overall. If they still want more money, then they didn't really "love" what they were doing in the first place.

As unfashionable and out of touch as it might be, I agree with French philosophy, (regarding breast size) that, "anything larger than a champagne glass is unnecessary", (ostentatious even)..

So, while y'all are ooglin' those "biguns", remember this, the pull of gravity is inexorable and inescapable.

Or, as Mad Magazine, in their "Special Love Edition", from decades ago said. "everything gets bigger, hairier, and closer to the ground".

Well, I'm in my 70's, and alone. Albeit two cats short of six. To be fair though, they're more than likely better company than 90% of the a**holes on Twitter...or Tic-Tok.

I try to balance the best aspects of my psychological makeup, (misanthropy, narcissism, with a dash of sociopathy, (complete lack of empathy)), all of which make living alone more of a joy than a curse..

Besides, look how many "friends" I have here at Techspot.

You do know what a bra is, right?

You're quoting Mad magazine? Really with that? That statement is not only based on wives-tales, it is medically and objectively flawed.
