Apple's OS X and iOS were among the most vulnerable operating systems in 2014

Boom what? All the data comes from here:

https://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/search-advanced

For all of 2014, Win8.1 had 38 CVE's, OSX (all version starting with "10") had 229. Nice try though...
I don't think you are understanding what he was getting at. You can't compare Windows 8.1 with ALL versions of OS X. OS X came out 14 years ago this month - what maybe you aren't noticing is ALL versions of OS X start with 10 thus far. 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, ect all the way through 10.10 which Apple is on now. Currently its 10.10.2.

I didn't make the comparison, he did. I just showed him where his numbers were wrong. And to be fair, for all of 2014, XP, WinServer 2000, WinServer 2003, WinServer2008, WinServer2012, Vista, Win 7, Win8, and Win8.1 combined had 60 unique CVE's, far less than OSX.

Still, without a breakdown of what versions of OS X have which CVE count its worthless to compare. 10.0-10.4 only ran on PPC Macs, that is 2006 and prior. 10.4-10.10 run on x86 but the amount of people online with 10.9 maybe 10.8 and prior is really low.

It may very well be that a modern OS X 10.8-9 and up have more than Windows, but with the data provided in the article (and linked article) it is impossible to tell.

Don't bother. Seriously. Never enter your password unless you absolutely know what you are doing is what you want to do from a trusted source. Just general Apple good practice is to enable 2-step verification.
