BIOS out of DATE

your machines will not post because the ASUS bios does not recognize the Pentium D.

Do not assume that your NIB ASUS MB has a bios fresher than one from 2005.

If you are trying to do a NEW build with all new parts and you cannot get it to post I promise you the problem is the ASUS MB Bios.

To get past this you are going to have to use a Pentium 4 or celeron chip to start your machine. Then you need to actually READ what the bios version is at POST. Then you will need to download the latest ASUS p5ld2 bios, called something 705, unzip it, load it on a floppy and rename it p5ld2.rom or p5ld2e.rom and then use the Asus utility (alt+f2 at post) to load the new bios.

Reboot.

Then there will be a CMOS error, LOAD DEFAULT VALUES AND CONTINUE.

REBOOT.

after your machine gets up and running and you have version 705 BIOS loaded good a proper shut it down and install the Pentium D.

Now you are in business.

Does the fact that I'm using AMD Athlon 64 change any of this?

No. ASUS MBs commonly have OLD BIOS' that do not recognise newer chips. Esp dual cores and or 64 bit cpus.

Load the latest bios, you'll still need an earlier chip to get started. Whatever the FIRST listed compatible chip is.
