Battlefield 1942 freeze

    hey, i have this realy annoying problem with bf1942. It seems to be that everytime i play SP, as soon as i spawn, it kind of freezes. it lags alot for about 5 seconds then just freezes. any ideas? also, in call of duty after about 5 minutes of playing my screen goes black but i can still hear myself shooting and running around. need halp!

    1GB Ram
    ATI Radeon 9600XT 256mb version
    1.8 Ghz processor
    Windows XP SP2
