It will most likely work. But the cable company will NOT support it under any circumstances, unless it is the same brand and model as something they sell and install. It is very handy to be able to have the cable company's tech support people take a look inside your computer or cable modem from their tech support base in Houston or Las Vegas or Tumacacori.
And they will NOT help you or provide you with tech support at any location I know... and that policy is part of your sign up.
There are a lot of lightning damaged cable modems, or customer damaged, or water damaged, or electrically damaged modems out there on eBay. Remember what Forest Gump said.
