Can't get past boot

just finished a hard drive install. everything was working ok, installed a few programs and now after start up pc freezes when I click on anything. have to manually turn off. I am running windows 98se
help!!!

never mind....

....figured out how to boot in safe mode and ran msconfig,unchecked a couple of the programs I installed and everything works great now. still not sure what the promblem actually was/is
