Using a gun on someone who has not threatened your life or put you in imminent danger will land you in prison for longer than the car thief would have gotten. You are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

That depends on where you live. There are laws that allow the use of deadly force to protect one's home. If you're in my house, uninvited, in the middle of the night you are a potential threat to me.
