am i in a lose-lose situation here? my emachine gives me this message:" c:/doc&settings/moniquefreeman/localsettings/temporaryinternetfiles/content:ie5/L8IvQ8gx/exe. is not a valid win32 application" whenever i try to download anything. what i need to download are the drivers for my cd-rom. the pc has no floppy and for me to clean the hard drive means a restore cd or boot disk or recovery cd. how can i fix the problem which i believe is a clean install of xp if i cant make my rom work to take the new copy? what do i do to fix my slow pc?

That message doesn't make sense, unless it's a typo somewhere. Even so, it's pointing to your temp folder which shouldn't control your connection.
Try creating another user account and see how it behaves that way. If it works, transfer all the files to the new user account and delete or 'park' the current one.
