I am a Computer technician / PC repair guy, and have been given a pc with similar problems today.

I think yahoo might have been to blame, but this PC was loaded with Viruses and Spyware so it's hard to say.
I actually have a little suspicion it also has something to do with HP. From doing a quick google, most people with this problem have items in the "Add and Remove Programs" utility which are hp / compaq related.

If you can use system restore, then do as it seems to be a problem with a corrupted registry. Doing a system restore to an earlier date should restore the registry, and thus the "Remove" icons from "Add and Remove Programs".

If you can't do a System Restore, then I would recommend using a program such as ccleaner
Not only is it great for cleaning out systems, but under "Tools" it has a great Uninstall utility which works great.
Note: If you uninstall a program with ccleaner, it's advisable to run it's registry scan. Actually whenever you uninstall with anything you will get a few hits with it.
