COD MW2 install/update issue

Can anyone advise why I have to log into Steam to play the game. All I want is single player. After I thought it was installed, I am now waiting forever it seems for some update to download. I thought that was the purpose of buying the disk. I don't need to download the game. I already have it.
This is new to me.

Hi Photo, Steam is a form of Digital Rights Management that Modern Warfare 2 uses and requires you to log in if you don't leave it on all the time. It's rather unintrusive and will auto-update your game to the latest version by default.

You can however change that if you don't like it by going to Library > Right Click Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 > Properties > Updates and set it to 'Do not automatically update this game'.

You can also turn Steam 'off' in essence by going into 'offline mode' which means every time you play, Steam will start up but not connect to the network and just idle in the background. Here is the 'How To' from Steam support page.
