Constant computer freezing

  1. I just started experiencing constant freezing on my desktop. The only thing im running is a IE8 or Firefox with a few tabs open. Freezes up every minute or so and lasts for 30+ seconds and then starts working again. One thing I noticed is when the freezing occurs there is no sound from my computer. As soon as the freezing goes away I can hear my computer working again. Kind of like the loading/crunching sound a computer makes sometimes.

    Things I have done/checked:
    Dusted with air can
    CPU and Power fan working
deleted some old files and programs

Im thinking part of my RAM is going bad but im not sure.

Just replaced broken video card with a cheaper card that has no fan. This may sound like a dumb question but could the freezing be becaus the card is overheating? Do I need to install an external fan for the card?

Does anyone think defraging will work?

Your suspicion may be correct. This does sound like a heat issu which results in freezing.
