Convert from USB to Optical/Audio in?

Is it possible to convert a signal from a laptop via a usb cable into an audio in port or optical port in a HiFi? Are there any wires that can do this? is it even possible? My bro wants to try to get the music playing on his laptop to go thorugh to the hifi, utilizing its 6.1

You want an USB-SPDIF adapter I believe. There are such things around. I'm not sure about 6.1 though. 5.1 should be available at least on some models.
