Doctor designs a 3D-printable device that helps people end their life

His name is Dr. Philip Nitschke. If that doesn’t sound familiar, perhaps you’ll recognize him by the nickname that he inherited from Dr. Jack Kevorkian — "Dr. Death." Nitschke is a physician in Australia famous for being the first medical practitioner to administer a lethal injection to one of his patients, way back in 1996. Kevorkian would do the same thing two years later and go to prison for second-degree homicide.

Nitschke believes that choosing to die should be a fundamental human right, regardless of illness. He wrote the book "The Peaceful Pill," which is essentially a handbook on committing suicide. He is also the founder of Exit International, an advocacy group for euthanasia that is mostly responsible for campaigning for the legalization of assisted suicide.

Nitschke's latest efforts in the field have gone high-tech. According to Newsweek, he has designed a suicide machine he calls the Sarco and claims the device will allow people to die peacefully.

The Sarco evolved from another solution nicknamed the “Exit Bag.” It was a breathing mask that used carbon monoxide to asphyxiate the patient. Despite being highly efficient and painless, it was not very appealing to patients.

“People don’t want to leave the world in such an aesthetically displeasing way.”

With 3D printing continually becoming more mainstream, Nitschke spent several years designing a more “aesthetically pleasing” way for patients to go out. He describes the Sarco as “sleek and luxurious.” Indeed, it looks like a futuristic vehicle or a personal spaceship.

“It resembles a spaceship and is intended to convince its user that he or she is journeying to the great beyond,” said Newsweek.

The Sarco is comprised of two parts — the sarcophagus and the base. The base acts as a stand and houses canisters of liquid nitrogen. The capsule is designed so that it can detach from the stand and be used as a coffin.

Once triggered, the nitrogen is released and enters the capsule. After a minute and a half, there is a brief period of drunkenness (nitrogen narcosis). Three minutes in, the patient goes unconscious with death occurring at about the five-minute mark.

“Nitschke vowed that a Sarco death was relatively painless—there is no asphyxiation, and the user breathes easily, he said, comparing it to an airplane cabin depressurizing.”

He is currently working on licensing agreements with several suicide clinics in Switzerland but eventually plans on releasing the design open-source.

While the device will not be legal everywhere, several locations do allow physician-assisted suicide. Washington, California, Vermont and Oregon have all enacted euthanasia laws. Several European countries such as Switzerland and the Netherlands have also legalized it. The state of Victoria in Australia passed legislation just this week allowing euthanasia.

As morbid as some may find it, there is a market for Nitschke’s Sarco.

I'd rather this then people splattering their guts all over the sidewalk from jumping off a bridge/building. Or someone blowing their brains out in their bedroom for their loved ones to walk into (that last one hits home as that has happened to me. Was at a friend's talking to his parents about how to find help for him when we heard a loud bang. Ran up to his room and...yeah. Not a pretty sight. And having to see his parents see it made it even worse).

A few modifications (brushed metal exterior) include a soylent green vending machine on the back and we have the next winning apple device. Call it the iGO and people will queue up for hours to get one.....
make it electric powered and there can even be a Tesla branded version.
In a few years it can even be self driving, order one online and it will drive itself to where you live and then to the funeral home.
Then there will be the dictator's version. Drives to the dissident's place of residence, offers them a free drive and before you know it........

Take it one step further: put sonic disrupters in the base. Then self-drive straight to the cemetery and use them to dig your own grave--cut out the middle man! :)

Aren't doctors murdering enough people already? More than all the terrorists, all the criminals, all the floods, volcano eruptions, hurricanes and other natural disasters on the planet. And now they want to speed up the process? What happened to "modern medicine will make people live longer"?

Instead of saving people and finding cures, they have basically said "let's kill the patients, since we can't help them".

Vaccines are a lot cheaper and FDA approved. That's if you're really trying to kill yourself.

The fact of the matter is that Vaccines save far more lives than they cause harm too.

Any idea what our infant/young child mortality rates would be like without our Vaccination programs?

I accept that there are links to autism and other immunodeficient disease but without said vaccines, millions of children would perish or become disabled.

The life first needs to be saved before you can count it. You have no idea if said vaccine is even still needed.
So the statistics are meaningless?

Any idea as to the infant mortality rates, down to things like Poliovirus, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Influenza, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Yellow fever or any of the other preventable diseases doing the rounds before vaccinations were widely available to our masses?

If you did and/or love your children, and wish them to have half a chance at surviving the rigors of today's environment nevermind yesterdays you are going to spin that wheel. Lesser of two evils is exactly such and only religious and/or very paranoid people believe otherwise really.

Modern medicine and science are there for a reason, accept that fact or climb back into a cave. The world spins im afraid.

And im not saying that to you to provoke you or in a derogatory fashion, but because facts are facts, and some diseases are indeed preventable via vaccination been that way for over 100 years now!

I'm going to say this as nice as I know how. I can understand vaccines if they are only used when needed. Why take a chance on contaminating our bodies from something out of a lab, if we never need to. A close analogy would be Chemotherapy. They actually believe they can fight cancer by making it worse. And if you ask me that cancer was given to you by means of vaccine. But good luck in not getting your cancer shot.

Actually, most of the diseases disappeared because of soap, clean drinking water, more hygiene (not pooing on the street) and abundance of food thanks to technology. You can find charts showing that ALL diseases disappeared at the same rate. Those for which we have vaccines equally as those for which we still don't. Vaccines can help with some diseases (like tetanus) but for many others they are too weak.

For example, if you got the MMR vaccine, you're still not safe. You need everyone else to be vaccinated (because of the so called "herd immunity") in order to be safe. So you have to force everyone to vaccinate, just because your immunity is crap after being... "immunized".

Then after 10 years you have to vaccinate yourself again. Which increases the risk of infections during vaccination, or getting poisoned by the preservative chemicals.

But... if you contracted the disease as a child, and got naturally immune, that's all you need. You don't care about herd immunity anymore. Even if everyone around you is sick, you don't care. Because you're permanently immune.

So it's really stupid to vaccinate children with weak MMR vaccine, giving them illusion they are protected, and then they might contract that disease when they are adults. When it's a lot more dangerous. Let the kids have child diseases. They'll become naturally immune and resilient, and won't have to bother others to vaccinate because they themselves feel insecure.
