id Software co-founder John Carmack has officially resigned from the company. If you recall, the gaming icon was hired as the CTO for Oculus VR back in August and has been splitting his time between the two companies ever since. Apparently, that arrangement didn't work out too well.

Carmack said earlier today via Twitter that he wanted to remain with the company he helped create as a technical advisor but it just didn't work out. He noted it was probably for the best as dividing his focus between the two was challenging. Carmack jokingly added that if they didn't want him to talk on stage at Quakecon next year, he'll just have to fill up the lobby like the old days.

Tim Willits, id Software studio director, pointed out that Carmack's decision to leave would not have any impact on current projects as his work on id Tech 5 was complete. He said they were fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at the company that worked with John and will carry on id's tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology.

Carmack has been interested in virtual reality for decades but it's only now that the people and technology are finally coming together to allow it to reach the potential that many have envisioned. He helped co-found id Software in the early '90s. He was instrumental in the development of a number of hit titles over the years including the Doom, Quake, Rage and Wolfenstein franchises.

I'm happy for John and wish him great success in his new position.

Displays with very high pixel per inch density make VR goggles a sound deal. And Carmack's history for optimizing code will give me the faith that they will work optimally.

Cross-eyed is the new black.

Near vision focus is the rage nowadays.

Who needs to see more than 30 metres when you have google?

Having a box onto my head look so silly that I'll never attempt to try one. Ever.

You'll miss out on a lot in life if you're too worried about looking silly to have fun.

Dorkish you bet. Dont know if I like it. Trying to reach for my beer while playing I could nock it over...waste of beer.
