ust what the heck is that?

Friends of mine all of a sudden can't hook up to the internet,
    they're just on phone line.

There's a yellow thing by that WAN Miniport thing in their device mgr.
Properties says Windows couldn't load the driver.

I tried to find the driver on their XP disc, no go.

Tried deleting it but it said it's needed for bootup (???)

Or is it something they don't want at all and I should just
    uninstall or delete it?

    Thanks!

Hi Macx and welcome to the TS Forum

what exactly happens when your friend tries to connect to the net.

What ISP is he using, does the modem work OK, does it respond to a query, is it a standard modem for a phone line, or is it an ADSL type modem,

Have you tried removing all the network related items and then rebooting and see if that helps.
