Dvd/cd reader

My dvd/cd reader does not read anymore, it tells me to insert disc, or disc not found. my pc does acknowledge the drives existence, so do you recon that its time for a new one ? or could it be a repairable fault?

Do you have any cds or dvds that are bootable? If so - put that in and reboot (make sure its set in BIOS to boot off cd before hard drive). If it won't boot off the disk its time for a new drive. If it does then something in Windows is screwed up.
