Facebook is working on a dedicated Messenger app for the Mac, according to a report from TechCrunch. The site has published a photo of what it claims to be a pre-release version of the app being used by a Facebook employee.

“While it’s tough to see in this grainy close up, the official client the Facebook employee was working on includes a navigation tab bar in the bottom left,” reports the site. “It matches the tab bar options in official Messenger for iOS mobile app, including Recent, Groups, People, and Settings.”

If the report prove to be true, then it will be the first time that Facebook has released an official desktop messenger app since 2012. Facebook Messenger for Windows was shut down on March 3, 2014 - two years after it launched – with the company merely stating: “We’re sorry, but we can no longer support Facebook Messenger for Windows.”

When Facebook Messenger for Windows was released, the company promised that a Mac version would soon follow. While this Apple desktop version never materialized, the new photo and eyewitness report suggests that Facebook has finally decided to keep its word.

While we don’t know for certain if this rumored product will ever see the light of day, the number of new functions introduced to Messenger over the last year suggests that Facebook is really pushing it as a service that can meet all your needs; it's highly likely that the company will want to introduce new versions of the chat app.

Messenger apps are becoming increasingly popular; a number of people now prefer to use them over traditional forms of electronic communication such as texting and emails. Facebook Messenger was the fastest-growing app of last year, with a 31 percent increase in users from 2014.

Facebook has declined to comment on the story, saying: “We don’t comment on rumor or speculation.”

"Facebook Messenger was the fastest-growing app of last year, with a 31 percent increase in users from 2014."

I can't remember if it was last year or the year before when they removed the messenger part from the facebook app, forcing everyone to install the standalone app for messenger... Is that real growth?
