  1. I've only known it as the pound sign or number sign. This thing #. Now it's called a hashtag. My question is, exactly what does it do when one clicks on it in Facebook ? An example I use is #kirotv. Or #seahawks.

No, # is the pound sign, or a signature for a music notation of a Sharp, aka F#

A hashtag is like #something and users can find comments by others who post with the same #hashtag.
