FPS problem on 2D game

Ok so I had an old HP pavilion with integrated graphics and the game ran perfect. Recently that computer gave out and wouldn't even turn on. So I was looking online at some refurbised PCs and I found a HP compaq dc5700 small form factory with intel core 2 duo processor, 750gb hd, 4gb ram, and with windows 7 for a couple hundred bucks so I decided to buy it. Computer works fine like brand new. The main reason I bought it is to play my 2D game like before. So I download it and I instantly notice lag and I check everything like internet connection and everything else and I finally see its because I'm only getting 10-15 FPS. So I been researching the last 3 days and so far no progress, I just dont understand how my only junk computer ran at 30-50 FPS which was more than enough for this 2D game. This computer I have now has integrated Intel GMA 3000 graphics, but serioulsy how good does a graphics chip need to be to run a 2D game properly, my old computer had nothing special. Please if any can help it would be greatly appreciated. THANKS.

If your new PC is better than your old PC by all means, first check if anything else is running in the background, and consuming a lot of CPU cycles, i.e., having a lot of CPU usage. Most common culprits are Photoshop, rundll32.exe, malware, etc. You haven't stated which game particularly you want to (or used to) play.
Plus, the settings at which you run the game also matter. Some more details would be helpful.

The game is called Tibia. Nothing is running in the background I even turned the visual performance on windows down for best performance. The game runs in DirectX5, also OpenGL is an option which runs at 30FPS which would be perfect, but when I walk the whole client freezes and crashes. I think I answered all your questions. If you need anymore info just ask. Thanks for the reply.

Strange. That's like how MDK stopped working on Win7 for me. Could even be a bug (you downloaded it, right?) or a compatibility issue.
Wait for a few hours, maybe someone with more knowledge on the issue can help you?
Kind regards, Marnomancer.

Yeah its downloaded right even uninstalled and re-downloaded it. I'm wondering if its because the computer used to have windows XP and the people who refurbished it put windows 7 on it. Thanks for the help.

Older games that came out way before the current version of Windows can often be made to play fine if you change the compatibility mode to an older version of Windows. In this case since the game was originally released in 1997, you could try to change the compatibility mode to Windows 95 or 98 or possibly Windows NT or 2000. Anyway give it a try.

Just tryed all four and no luck FPS stayed the same. Do you know why the FPS is higher when I use openGL than when I use DirectX5?

In looking up your PC at the HP website it appears that no Windows 7 compatible drivers are available. Although Vista drivers are available and could work with Windows 7, maybe there is a problem with that. Anyway, you could try to install the appropriate Vista drivers (chipset, LAN, sound, video, etc.).

Tryed installing but nothing changed, so I decided to uninstall the graphics drivers or the whole graphic not sure what I did but now I'm getting 65FPS in low resolution and before I was getting 20 FPS in low resolution. Whats up with that?

And now the automatic update is wanting to install the graphics for windows 7. The game runs way better now, but when I watch movies on netflix it skips. Any more info would be greatly appreciated.

I presume you mean the graphics driver. I would try to update the driver.

I second that. When I bought my PC, the gfx drivers were at version 182.xx. When I updated them to 285.xx, the FPS in all games rose. Could help in your case too.

I uninstalled the whole Intel GMA 3000 program there is no graphics in advanced settings tabs in resolution screen. What should I do the game plays better without it installed.

Ok so now when I turn my computer off and turn it back on it automatically reinstalls the graphics and I'm back to 10fps so I uninstalled it again and I'm at 65fps. So you mean to tell me everytime i want to play I got to unistall the graphics? Anyone know whats going on??

If playing w/o gfx drivers works best for you, don't install them at all. Simple. Though I personally don't recommend that for newer games.

It automatically installs on start up. It works much better for the game but everything else involving graphics sucks like watching videos or my screen resolution etc. Do you think it installs incorrect drivers since the computer orignally had windows xp and it has windwos 7 now and it installs windows 7 drivers?

You have to download and install the drivers which are meant for your PC. Drivers for Vista generally work for 7, but I don't think XP drivers will. Download drivers meant for your system, like Windows 7 32/64-bit from the manufacturer's website. It's difficult to understand what's going on with your system. I'll check it up.
Good luck till then.

There aren't any windows 7 drivers for my computer because this computer was made with XP. I have installed windows 7 34bit with the automatic updates on the computer, but it still slows down FPS. I have no idea what is wrong with this computer.

I think it's clear that if you don't have drivers compatible with the operating system you are using, you will not have good performance. Drivers aren't an option. They're essential for complete utilization your hardware.
