Gmail Privacy & Verification

Hey everyone,
I logged into my Gmail account and they demanded my phone number for verification.
I hate giving my personal details online, what should I do?

In a way, thats good in case you forget your password. I've been in the same boat but will not use it. I know this don't answer your question, but.......

I also din't like giving any personal information, especially my phone number. But it's the only way to recover your password in case you'll forget it. The only way out is to register an account in another email service which doesn't require your phone number or anything else.
