Google wants to stop people joining ISIS by using targeted advertising

  1. Unless you happen to work in the ad industry, you’re probably not a fan of targeted advertising. But Google is working to use the technique as a way of combating the spread of online terrorist recruitment and propaganda.

Several online firms, including Google, Facebook, and Twitter, have been accused of not doing enough to prevent terror organizations, especially ISIS, from utilizing their services. The issue has led to several lawsuits being filed against the companies by the relatives of those killed in terrorist atrocities.

But according to a report by Wired, Google-owned tech incubator and think tank – Jigsaw – has spent the last year developing the Redirect Method, which combines Google’s search advertising algorithms and YouTube’s video platform to hopefully dissuade potential recruits from joining ISIS and undo the group’s brainwashing.

"The Redirect Method is at its heart a targeted advertising campaign: Let's take these individuals who are vulnerable to ISIS' recruitment messaging and instead show them information that refutes it," said Jigsaw's head of research and development Yasmin Green. "This came out of an observation that there's a lot of online demand for ISIS material, but there are also a lot of credible organic voices online debunking their narratives."

The method is activated whenever someone Googles one of 1700 keywords or phrases that Jigsaw believes people with ISIS sympathies often search for. In among the results will be ads containing links to English- and Arabic-language YouTube videos that contain testimonials from former extremists, imams denouncing the group, and even long food lines in the ISIS’s Syrian stronghold Raqqa.

“The Redirect Method is at its heart a targeted advertising campaign: Let’s take these individuals who are vulnerable to ISIS’ recruitment messaging and instead show them information that refutes it,” Green added.

The method has already proved successful; in a two-month trial earlier this year, more than 300,000 people were drawn into Jigsaw’s chosen YouTube channels.

Later this month, there will be a second-phase relaunch of the project targeting both potential ISIS recruits and white supremacists in North America.

Green pointed out that the Redirect method isn’t used to track or trace those who it sends to the YouTube channels. "These are people making decisions based on partial, bad information," she said. "We can affect the problem of foreign fighters joining the Islamic State by arming individuals with more and better information."

Using media to influence people's opinions? While it sounds like an excellent idea in the current war on terror, how long will it be before it becomes the Picus News Network?

How to stop people joining ISIS in 3 easy steps:

    1. Capture ISIS operatives alive.
    2. Impale or behead them them on 4K video.
    3. Tell people this is what happens to ISIS operatives.

It ain't that hard, folks. People are reluctant to join groups with a high likelihood of gruesome death.

They wouldn't care that much since it would be considered martyrdom. If I was in charge of a campaign to deter people from joining ISIS, it would go something like this: Any ISIS member captured would be killed. All members killed, deceased, or dead as a result of a suicide bombing would be have their remains scheduled for unending pig carcass wrapping. Every 10 or 20 years, their remains would be repeatedly wrapped in pig carcasses from slaughter houses. This would go on indefinitely until ISIS (and radical Islam) was no more. If every single country had this policy, attacks, recruitment, bombings would drop virtually to nothing. The only ones that would still be doing terrorism would only be the ones who haven't heard of said policy.

"white supremacists" wow, I didn't realize that it is still that big of an issue or is that a nice way of saying KKK?

One would have to be horrendously self deluded and rigid in one's views to the degree of severe mental impairment to want to join ISIS in the first place. Advertising won't fix it.

You've just taken my simple three-step process and added a bunch of overhead.

The point, which Google et. al. are completely missing, is that martyrdom is the persuasion tactic used post-recruitment to sell these fools on giving up their lives.

Flood the public consciousness with images of mutilated ISIS corpses and soon they don't have any applicants to screen, let alone trick into martyrdom.

As a bonus, such imagery could be juxtaposed with ISIS commanders and financial backers living the good life with women and luxury.

The organization would tear itself apart.

but, death does not scare a radical Islamist, they almost embrace it... this is what makes them so dangerous. Because they don't care you must do something they DO care about.

Female executioners. Dying at the hands of a female damns one to Hell, per the Koran.

Exactly. Heck Google probably thinks anyone that doesn't worship Hillary or Obama is a white supremacist.

His response is more likely what the radical Islamist would fear most. Your approach would likely serve ISIS recruitment since each and everyone of those killed would be considered martyrs to the cause.

I always wonder if martyrdom is sold to the faithful as such a great idea why no one says "I'll be nice and let you go first"

Probably the idea is that you get to be with your maker.

Constant advertising is shaping people to become shallow sheep which is one of the reason islamists hate western society and it's people. It's what I heard. More advertising isn't going to make an insane person change his or her mind.

Each time Islam has encroached upon the West, it has been dismissed via the mass slaughter of its warriors and invasion forces. "Go forth an be a martyr" only sells when martyrdom doesn't involve being part of a mass grave.

They do care - the Russians went usually for the terrorist relatives - after several demonstrations (including castration of a male relative of a known terrorist leader) by some KGB fellows, they stopped their game and moved the horseplay elsewhere.
