graphics kinda choppy

I just got the ATI radeon x800 xl in PCI-E, I'm running on a multiprocessor 3.0ghz hyperthreading PC with a gig of ram. My concern is with the graphics, the performance is great little to no lag, but it's just kind of choppy I can't explain it, such as doom 3 my character is fine, but the surroundings are kinda choppy, like you can see random lines that kind of flash... I guess lol if you understand what I'm saying could you suggest anything for me.

Have you tried patching the game? They are up to v1.3 on the patches i think.

well no... it's on any game, I think it may be something running in the background that could possibly do it, because sometimes I won't even be on my computer and Ill see the hourglass come up for a second.
