Having trouble connecting my laptop to the internet

  1. i have a question to ask i have a laptop is a pentium 4 windows xp home edition i am tryeing to connect it to my internet but im having trouble doing so i have a broadband connection i plug in the laptop and all it does is have a local connection and i cant get on to the internet or windows live messenger or etc... does any one pleas ehave some advise

    Is it Ethernet?

    go into Control Panel, Network Connections, Local Area Connection & Right Click. Choose Properties, Highlight Internet ProtocolTCP/IP and make sure it's set to automatically obtain IP & DNS addresses.

    See what it's set at, if it's already at Auto for both, let us know
