I just exited a house and went to the neighborhood. I tried to go to another house, but the family that was in there was gone! I checked all of the houses and they were nowhere to be found... what's going on?

i think you somehow deleted you current family ...

No, the problem is I have NO families, at all. They all dissapeared from the neighborhood. Their houses all still have all of the furniture and other things that were in them before they disappeared. And as you enter one of the houses, you can still hear the two kids playing for a second or two, but they never appear.

thats wierd.... did you like change and Settings in the Options or anything
....well what i would do is copy the save file on another file
uninstall the game
reinstall it and paste the save file back into the directory

No, didn't change anything...

But yeah, that's what I figured I needed to do to fix it.
