I have tried to follow the instructions before posting the hijackthis log but found it quite confusing so this is the log after a reboot from using search and destroy, ad-arware, cclean and an AVG scan. all help appreciated.

    Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Your log is clean but for a few superfluous entries.

    Boot into safe mode.

Let HJT fix the following(if there).

    O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)
    O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe (file missing)

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{BE52CEAA-6BD4-41A3-A42A-3DCA20A38A13}: NameServer = 205.188.146.145 <Only fix this if it doesn`t belong to your isp.

    O23 - Service: AOL Spyware Protection Service (AOLService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\AOL Spyware Protection\\aolserv.exe (file missing)
