HP Reformatting

Ok, I'm new to this but need help. My PC has pretty much been out of sync for the last year. I have an HP that has a axel.dav virus. I tried the usual spyware, stinger and safe mode but none of it helped. I want to just start from scratch but i did not even get disc to reformat this it.

So any help you can give. this is my last hope before taking it in and paying someone to fix it.

should i do this in safe mode after I download this?

It can be done in Safe mode
Even Safe mode with networking
But all programs should be updated prior to scanning

Also Hijackthis Scan must be done in Normal mode
