Howdy!

I'm hoping someone here will have the answer to a rather weird problem.

I run a bulletin board that uses SMF software (version 1.0.8). Just one of our members has been running into a problem accessing the board. She gets hit by a barrage of browser windows that open faster than she can close them down. We're talking on the order of more than 40 windows opening in a matter of seconds.

I don't believe it is the board software. If it was, all of the members using IE would be running into the same problem ... and an enormous majority of the members are on IE6.

She is running Windows XP, IE6, with the standard Windows Firewall. As far as I know, she doesn't have anything tricky or unusual installed on her computer in terms of protection.

Anyone got a clue what might be causing this?

it's an ActiveX component or a Java Applet.

flush the browser cache,
delete downloaded programs (from inside the browser Options)

have her install Spywareblaster from here

and then update and protect the HOST file

Thank you! We're working on this fix. We were beginning to despair that we'd never find the answer.

OR USE FIREFOX ^^

I wish it were that easy, but Firefox actually has issues with SMF. There are clashes between the two.
