IE8 or Firefox desktop take forever to open or not at all

What would cause IE8 or Firefox desktop icons takes forever to open or not at all? I know did this when I had microsoft essentials and now I'm running norton internet security 2010. If I close them after opening them they reopen unless I reboot the computer.

well i personal dont like norton internet security it allways slow my pc down iv been using AVG free for 3 years and i hav had a problem since

Get rid of anything starting with 'Norton' !! ....... secondly I'd say clean out all history/cache of both browsers .... run a decent malware cleaner (there are lots of free ones out there e.g. malware bytes etc.) ..... i hope these simple steps may help

Norton Internet Security slows too much PC. Remove all that and put Avira Free Edition and Comodo Firewall both free and works well block anything unwanted and the most important do not slows down PC.

I removed all of norton and put Dr webbs security package on my PC.

Yes good idea Norton is too resource hungry. Have you seen an amelioration?
