Inaccessbile_boot_device

Well, as always, I turn to the experts on this board for help.

I have a win 2k machine, with a Western digital drive.

Sequential order:
1. machine boots to loading screen
2. Blue screens - "inaccessible_boot_device"

Attempted Fixes:
1. won't boot from CD even though it is set in Bios
2. Booted with disks, and ran
a. fixboot
b. fixmbr
3. Ran WD diagnostic tool, and everything came back fine

I have no idea what the problem is, but apparently my CEO needs this machine fixed (it is his home machine) and he doesn't want me to format the drive.

As always, help is greatly appreciated.

 

[Bug]

Is the device on a chain by itself? Was it working before? Can you boot into safe mode? (If partition magic was used to create partitions, do not use CHKDSK) Can you run a chkdsk to verify the partition is set up correctly?

Just throwing out some ideas...
