Install from xp oem cd onto different machine

I have two machines - a desktop with an oem xp install disk
and a laptop that I bought off ebay without any disks (made by another small manufacturer)

both machines have lovely shiny Windows XP stickers

while I was figuring out that the laptop hard disk was dying I reinstalled from my oem cd..
it seemed to work ok for five minutes (given that the hard disk was dying).

I'm just not sure if when my new hard disk arrives, should my XP oem cd work on the laptop? And let me activate xp properly.

(I can't believe that I have two legit serial stickers but cannot install without a "full cd" - but that seems to be the story)

I've been looking at "pid" manipulation, so is that a better option?

thanks!

You should be fine with installing it on the new drive, since your old one is trashed. You might need to call M$ and have them deactivate your old number so you can install this new one on the new drive without problems. This will eliminate your possibility of 2 installations with same disc.
