Is Microsoft Silverlight necessary?

I have XP, VISTA & WIN 7 on various computers at my place of business and am getting "important update" messages from Microsoft concerning this program. Since I use Firefox exclusively as my browser and Thunderbird as my mail client, do I really need Microsoft Silverlight ?

need? no. but since it comes with windows it is still a good idea to update it.

Silverlight is an MS effort to outfox Flash; ergo - - need=no, not yet at least.

HTML5 +CSS would/will be the next push.
