Latest Halo Infinite update locks out players if their graphics card has insufficient VRAM

Facepalm: If you've been playing Halo Infinite but suddenly found it no longer works after the latest update, here's some bad news: you probably need a new graphics card. The FPS has asked for 4GB of VRAM since launch, but some players found they were still able to play it using graphics cards that didn't meet that requirement – until now.

Halo Infinite's requirement that a graphics card has 4GB of VRAM is shown on both its Microsoft store page and the official game website. On Steam, there's no mention of the amount of VRAM needed but the minimum requirements are listed as an AMD RX 570 or Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti, both of which have 4GB of memory.

However, some people had been playing 343 Industries' title using cards that are more powerful than the GTX 1050 Ti but have less VRAM, such as the 3GB version of the GTX 1060, which users say ran the game quite well on lower settings.

The Season 3: Echoes Within update that arrived earlier this month is Halo Infinite's biggest multiplayer update yet, bringing with it new maps, modes, and weapons, along with support for ray tracing. As DSO Gaming reports, it also stops the game from working with cards featuring 3GB of VRAM, despite there being nothing in the patch notes about this new restriction – though 4GB of video memory was already a minimum requirement, so 343 Industries probably didn't feel the need to mention it.

Following the update, anyone trying to load the game with an incompatible card will find it doesn't start and encounter the following message.

It's been almost five years since Nvidia launched the GTX 1050 3GB, and the GTX 1060 3GB is even older, yet both remain popular among participants of Valve's Steam survey. If you do have either of these cards, though, you should probably think about upgrading, especially if you're a Halo Infinite fan.

It happens. Eventually these GPUs just aren't going to be supported.

I remember when my younger brother was using my old GTX 280 for gaming. When Dying Light came out and we went to play it co-op, my game loaded up just fine since I had just moved to the 980Ti from my 570s in SLI. Dying Light didn't support the 280 and it wouldn't launch for my brother.

I sent him one of my 570s so he could upgrade from the 280 and he used that 570 as his gaming card for about 3 years after I had used it for almost 4.5 years myself. He started running into issues with games not working on the 570 and also it hit end of life for support from Nvidia for drivers so he had to move on.

It happens. Whether it's from lack of VRAM or driver support, old GPUs are old. 5-7 years is a decent amount of time for a GPU, but eventually you need to move on.

It sucks that the developers still havent fixed issues with hacking, net code lag, ece but they can find time to implement a block like this. Some of us really like screwing around with really old unsupported hardware and just see what it can do.

Oh boo hoo, you had a good run being abe to use a below spec card to run the game. If you are still rocking a 1060 3GB I feel sorry for you and no I'm not suggesting a they get a much more powerful card, but there are still infinitely better cheap second hand options out there.

If it worked for them then it sucks to suddenly brick the game.
My banking app told me my phone was obsolete, despite it working well. Sticks in the throat.

Here's the thing, AFAIK specs aren't meant to be written in stone. Recommended is what you should be playing on, minimum is the cut off where support won't help you if it can't run. If a player can somehow get software to run on a below spec rig, more power to them I say.
