The latest Apple spy photo offers the clearest look yet at what may very well be the reverse of the upcoming iPhone 7.
The image, courtesy of French site NowhereElse.fr, shows a rear shell with a large, protruding camera cutout. This suggests the new iPhone will have a better overall camera although how exactly it’ll achieve higher-quality photos is unknown.
Apple has demonstrated in the past that it isn’t interested in playing the megapixel game. Several generations of iPhones kept the same megapixel count as Apple instead focused on other ways to improve image quality. In fact, it wasn’t until the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus that Apple made the jump from an 8-megapixel sensor to a 12-megapixel sensor.
We’ve heard rumors of a dual-lens system but based on this image, Apple may have scrapped that idea or is saving it for next year’s release.
The other obvious change is the repositioning of the rear antenna bands. Rather than have the bands cross over the rear shell horizontally, Apple has rerouted them to the top and bottom edge which affords a cleaner overall look. How this will impact cellular reception – if at all – remains to be seen.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus this September. Aside from faster internal hardware like the A10 SoC, most expect the new iPhone will be a bit thinner than its predecessor and offer improved waterproofing, a minimum storage capacity of 32GB and perhaps even 3GB of RAM. There’s also talk of Apple ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack in favor of its Lightning port although the latest leaked image neither confirms nor denies this.
