Michelin and GM's airless tires for passenger cars to launch within next five years

Call me when they launch in earnest...been promised this tech for over a decade and it's always 5 years away. These will go well with the flying car I can buy in 5 years...
The new tires will arrive around the same time as the Major Battery Breakthrough™, nuclear fusion power plants, and Artificial General Intelligence. The release date is easy to remember. It's the current date + 5 years.

2024 is going to be amazing!

Yes, airless tires are a good idea, but a few things:

1) They're ugly. It would be better (and likely) to make the tire an "insert" that fits inside an enclosed tire.

2) As an insert, surrounded by rubber, you eliminate the issue of foreign matter (mud, rocks, etc) getting stuck between blades, damaging the tire & impairing their ride quality.

3) Encased in a tire, you can also control air pressure to adjust ride quality.

4) Road nose will be reduced if the tire is enclosed.

5) If a gap/crack forms along the surface of the tire between blades, the entire tire will have to be replaced (a possible intentional design flaw.)

6) Impossible to balance if they don't wear evenly.

They're not very bright if they try releasing this "skeleton" of a tire as the tire itself.

What about factories that produce air compressors? This will cause loss of jobs. Incredible. First they make cameras without film, then recorders without magnetic tape, and now tires without air. What's next? Flying machines without helium?

Rarely will you find an air compressor that is not used for other things. Airing tires is a small portion of usage. Even in a tire shop there is likely more air goes through tools, than goes into airing tires.

Did you know that GULLIBLE is not in the dictionary?

That tire looks like crap. Don't like the look of that "see through" at all. I can see the tire wearing out quicker as the material breaks down. My biggest concern about it is how is the ride going to be. I was never a fan of the big rim skinny tire deal. Never liked the look (always looked like a gorilla walking on bird legs to me) and it just destroyed the ride for how I like a car to feel.

Will be fun to see the look on a police officers face, the first time he throws a set of stop sticks out
in front of one of these, and it doesn't work. ;)

Stop sticks XD
Is that the official name for them?

Wow, Americans really need things dumbed down don't they.

Ma'am, do you drive an automatic or manual gearbox?
Umm I drive stick
O_o

Explain to me why it matter what these things are called and how this has anything to do with your *****ic opinion on Americans being dumb. On the topic of manual gearboxes, last I checked, Americans are the biggest reason they still exist. European companies like Audi have been wanting to phase out the manual gearbox for years in favor of an automatic, so you tell me who wants things more dumbed down.

How about performance? I can't see these taking corners at speed very well...
I bet most people would be surprised at just how well well engineered composites can perform - especially sandwich designs. I am not saying that these will be well engineered, however.
1:54 in this video is the type of structure that I am talking about.

Life is too short to die boring cars.

When I'm on my death bed, I won't be reliving stories about driving 30 mph in the middle lane in some econobox Toyota.

I'll be bragging about all the times I exceeded the speed limits EXPONENTIALLY and even the few tickets I've gotten will be worth talking about.
Somehow, your reply does not surprise me. ;)

For me, life is too short to be spending so much time in gas stations.:D

I've been driving a stick since 1982. 5 Mustangs, all manual. I don't care for automatic.

I didn't realize stopping for 5 minutes was too long. I'll keep my petrol engine and have fun, while you drive your overly expensive vehicle that you have to plan routes to use, just to find an EV charging station. While you're planning your routes, I'll be having fun, just like the guy you quoted.

@wiyosaya- My reference was toward the tires as shown. With no sidewalls, cornering hard would generate extreme body roll, and I don't imagine it will be conducive to long tire life. I expect a product released for use by the general population will look much different from what we are seeing here.
