Microsoft releases "comprehensive rollup" for Windows 7 that includes all updates since SP1

Nah, I have win7 on my machine for some 2 years with NO updates and I haven't had one problem.

I'm of the opinion that is something you shouldn't find surprising.

When M$ formulates "security updates", they have to work under the assumption that no aftermarket protection software is extant on the PCs being patched. You know yourself, all M$ can do about that is set their OS to nag you to install AV software.

Accordingly, EOL for any particular Windows edition doesn't really happen when the almighty M$ corporation says it does, it happens when security software publishers stop supporting it.

In fact, you system is most likely safer running Firefox with security add-ons like "NoScript", than it is running the fully patched current version of Internet Explorer.

I use my XP desktop daily and run the occasional thorough anti malware scan. There are no issues so far but I would never consider using the machine for anything serious like internet banking or purchases. I don't even check emails with it. If I was unable to progress from W7 I'd make sure that I had a computer running Windows 10 fully updated for any risky computing tasks. Microsoft do try to keep our systems secure but it needs user cooperation too.

The problem is the base design of the OS was not good in the first place. One reason why version after version has a continuous "security patch" update mode (what I mean is MS sends out update patches after update patches to fix security holes with every new version of Windows). To repeat the old adage, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

How do you know for sure no root kits have turned your PC into a bot that most anti malware cannot detect? All it takes is an "injection" from an email in your inbox that you don't even have to open, or a link planted on a web page of an otherwise legitimate web site which likewise you do not even need to click on (to illustrate some of the more pernicious attacks).

Also, all you paranoid/complacent types should note that there are non-security fixes in this roll-up (and maybe not even the Win10 stealth installations ;-} ), which just might fix some basic OS, app, or hardware issues. I will probably get around to grabbing this after some of the pioneer "gamma (early adopter) testers" have it in place for a while and report back. That is how I have normally handled all Windows updates for some time now - no automatic updating, and let others "public test" them for a while, and otherwise let the patches mellow, before I chance them.

That is to say, that was my procedure up until Windows 10 with its cram mode updates, and that is why I only dabble in it, and stick with Linux for my "serious" stuff - "Linux on my desktop" for the last 10 years or so, and Windows 2000/XP/7 mostly on work machines - 8.x I have been dabbling with on personal machines in hopes of replacing it with Linux on some of the cool tablets it came on, but not much luck except in a VirtualBox so far (and a 64-bit Asus notebook which allowed a dual-boot setup with 64-bit Linux Mint 17 - most tablets only had 32-bit "Bing" Win 8.1 required by 32-bit UEFI that most Linux distros do not handle for installation - whole other rant for that... ).

I have win7 on one of my computers and like it very much. I installed it after hating win8.

However, I turned off all updates to win7 and use it as is. Although there are those who say that it is dangerous, I do not find any danger problems with it. I don't browse in questionable sites nor will I open questionable email attachments. I have an anti-virus to keep my computers clean.

I really don't see the great advantage in updates and I am certain that others will disagree but I am very happy with win7 with out any updates.
Just use Linux...please...if you aren't installing updates keep that crap off of the internet.

Take the tin foil off your head. Better yet just never mind someone Else's business.
Can you cite any legitimate research showing that security patches and updates do nothing to improve the overall functionality and security of Windows? If you don't install updates, what steps do you take to evaluate the security of your systems? It seems like you're responding to the tone of my comment more than the content...And even if you are "fine" without updates, is that your general recommendation?

Yeah that is true, however I do believe updates are necessary but not an absolute must. It's not the OS or version needing to be pushed off the Internet, it's the problematic user.

Sure an old system will fail testing of security. But that doesn't mean the average user test those parameters on a daily basis. And some may never test them at all.

And then you have the "it doesn't matter how secure you are the ignorant/***** user will find a way to break their own security" crowd. So for them it doesn't really matter which OS or how old it is that they use.

Well on september 2020 (January 2020 was win 7 end support) that time I got 108 updates (I was testing how would win 7 work in 2020) so what the F%#$ ?
