Missing speaker icon on my notebook?

I was once able to see a speaker appear when I turned the sound up/down/off from the controls on my notebook. Now I am only seeing the little speaker volume in the task bar increase or decrease, but no large icon on my desktop? Where did it go?

Do you know that you can right click on the Volume icon in the Notification Area and 'Open Sound & Volume Controls'?

If you point to this icon is says 'Volume' but a right click gives you access. You say 'speaker' bu I think you mean 'volume'.
